Easy Homemade Applesauce - An Appetite For Joy

Store bought applesauce is convenient and can be low in additives if you buy a good brand. But after discovering how easy it is to make (and how full of flavor!) I may never go back.

I used to steam apples and puree them for my son's baby food. It was the first food he was really interested in and always a good reliable meal when I mixed it with a vegetable and a grain.

Only recently did I start making large batches for my kids to snack on and to use in recipes. I love using green apples sweetened with honey (though honey isn't appropriate for those under age 2). It's such a lively tart taste. But any fresh apples would work well.

Enjoy!

Serves: 6 (makes 2 cups)

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 pounds apples (about 4-5 medium-large)

  • Β½ teaspoon lemon juice

  • 2 tablespoons water

  • sugar or honey (optional, 2-5 tablespoons)

  • cinnamon (optional, Β½ teaspoon)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Peel and slice the apples (about 8-10 slices per apple). Place them in a pot and sprinkle over a little lemon juice to keep the color. Add the water to the pot.

  2. Bring to a simmer then reduce to medium-low heat and simmer until the apples break down and are very soft (about 20 minutes). Remove from heat. At this point it has a slightly chunky texture. If you want it totally smooth, run it through a food processor.

  3. Add sweetener and spices to taste. Store in the fridge and enjoy!
